I USED TO WORK AT DAIRY QUEEN TOO. worst 2 years of my life though. most unprofessional asshole managers in the world. they would steal our tips to buy weed and alcohol and do drug deals in the parking lot. and they would stash 6-packs in the ice maker. it was so ridiculous. i was working on the grill when i was 14, which is illegal in so many ways. i never even had a work permit. haha sorry about the rant
Sorry you had a bad experience. Sounds pretty shitty. My boss was the best. I worked there for like 5 years and I still go back for seasonal help there sometimes b/c my boss is awesome and the people there are great.
Happy Thanksgiving. I hope everyone got their fill of turkey (minus all you vegetarians/vegans). Since thanksgiving is all about being thankful I thought I’d make a list of things I’m thankful for. This list is in no specific order.
- Having a supportive and loving family. They have helped me through the toughest times and always know how to show me the best of every terrible situation. Though they have never told me what to do with my life, they have always been great at guiding me and supporting my decisions even if they don’t always fully agree with them. They are always there to share good times and memories and are the most generous people that I have ever met. (I love you always)
- Having friends that make me laugh, smile and feel accepted in this crazy world. Having friends to party with and make a fool out of myself in front of. Having friends that stand behind me and are there for me when shit gets tough. Having friends that I haven’t seen in ages but still continue to call me from time to time and see how I am doing because they genuinely care about me. Having friends to sit in silence with without awkward tension. Having friends that let me crash on their couch when I’m in their town or have drank too much to drive. Though some friends are here for life, some for years, some for months and some for days I thank all of you for shaping me as an individual. (You know who you are. I love you)
- All of the bosses that I’ve had in the past especially Joe Stevenson at DQ. I can’t say that I’ve ever had a bad boss and they have always taught me valuable skills that I can take with me for the rest of my life. All of my bosses have been very flexible with my crazy schedule which I know isn’t always the easiest thing to deal with. Paying me money is always a plus too (-;
- I am lucky to have enough money and have the resources to be fed every day. There are tons of people who cannot afford to eat on a regular basis or just don’t have access to clean water or healthy food.
- The opportunities that I have been given.
——- I don’t know many people my age (or any age for that matter) that have been able to travel around the world as much as I have. Because I have been able to travel so much it has opened my mind up to different cultures, foods, ideologies and so on. I believe that it has made me a more well rounded person. I’ve made some of my best friends in other countries and I’ve had some amazing memories.
——- I am also thankful for my band. The Wonder Years is full of my best friends and they are all very talented people. I have shared the majority of my 20 something years with the band.
——- A college education. Thanks Mom, Dad, Nana and Pop Pop for helping me fund my education.
- Music, you have always been there for me. There is always a band or style of music that can put me in any kind of mood or help me through a shitty one. You have always been my outlet for creativity and my relief of stress. There are so many amazing bands out there that have been there for me whether they have known it or not.
- Movies. My favorite pass-time. How else would I enjoy the hours in which I do nothing other than using my computer…
- My computer. You are hours of entertainment daily.
There is much more that I am thankful for but the list would go on for days. These things listed above are what have made me who I am.
Hey man, I actually messaged your booking agent to do a side show on the K tour but he never got back to me.
Would be cool to do a headline show If you guys are up for it?
If not catch you at Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham!
I actually don’t take care of the booking whatsoever. I don’t know anything about that stuff so the best way would just be to try and get in contact with our Dave at The Agency Group again.
If worst comes to worse I’ll see you at the 3 Kerrang shows!
25-30 minutes isn't bad really.
do a side show or something :(:(
i'm coming to the manchester date and i am basically coming just for you guys. i hate how there's a barrier, it's not a wonder years show if there are no stage dives :(
Would like to do a side show. I’m not sure what is up with that though.
hey matt :)
do you have any idea how long your set will be at the K! Tour in February? and what songs you're thinking of playing? i can't actually wait to finally see you guys, i hope i get to meet you all aswell?
I don’t know for sure. We are playing first so I would assume that we are playing 25-30 minutes. We have no idea what we are playing yet. I’m excited to be back to the UK! Hopefully I’ll see/meet you on the tour. What show you coming to?
So happy to hear you're working on a new Christmas song. 'Christmas Means Nothing Without You' was an absolute banger! Come back to Dublin soon. Stay well!
I hope I finish it in time for Christmas. I have been so busy lately. I’m glad that you liked “Christmas Means Nothing Without You.” Be in Dublin on February 3rd and 4th on the Kerrang! Relentless Energy Tour at Academy with Good Charlotte, Four Year Strong and Framing Hanley. Hopefully I see ya at the show!
Any ideas on when you guys will let us hear some of the songs currently being written?.....I know that's kind of a stretch. By the way, you guys changed my life, and the Cleveland show was the highlight of my year. Thanks for everything.
I don’t know when the record is coming out because we don’t even start recording until January but probably not for a long while. (-: I’m glad that you had a great time at the Cleveland show. That show ruled even though there were so many obnoxious juggalos outside the venue. Thanks for listening.
Just pack a couple of toothpicks and a screwdriver. If it ever happens again, stick a tootpick or two in the hole, then screw the nut back in. Did that to my guitar 2/3 years ago and it's never come out since.
I know. That is what I do. I just didn’t have time to do it while we were playing. Thanks for the heads up though. The hole was filled in with toothpicks and glue then I just re-drilled the hole. I’ve had this happen multiple times. I’ve actually broken the screw off in my guitar before. That was a bitch. Had to drill it out then fill the hole with glue and rosewood and then re-drill it.
You guys need to let me book another show at the grange in Olympia. Those show were so much fun.
If you hit up Dave Shapiro at The Agency Group maybe you can work something out. I do agree that the shows at the Grange were very fun! I believe that was the first show I played on drums for Man Overboard on that tour.
Oh, wow. That's insane. Make a mental note to bring three guitars next time. Haha. I remember you tuning for most of a song. And was wondering what was going on. But, it was definitely a good show. Can't wait to catch you all next time you're in VA/MD.
Yea, it was a string of bad luck but could have been much worse. I still had an amazing time at that show even with all the technical difficulties. Catch ya next time.
The Upsides show with AL4W at Chameleon Club in Lancaster, PA is listed on your site as December 19 and on the Chameleon site as December 12 and December 19. Can I safely assume that the 19th is the correct date to request off work?
December 19th is the correct date. I will see you there!
what happened to your guitars at the towson show? i think your les paul strap broke? then you switched to another, then ended up using alan's les paul. what happened?
That was a big mess. The screw for my strap on My Les Paul ripped out of my guitar so I couldn’t fix that on the spot. In this case I would normally just use my Explorer but two nights before the MD show I burned out the pickup somehow. I then used Casey’s backup Les Paul which I didn’t know this at the time but it really needs to be set up. The strings were fretting out and it sounded horrible for the 1 or 2 songs I used it for. Four Year’s guitar tech, John then grabbed me Alan’s guitar. That guitar was in a totally different tuning than we play in so it took me forever to tune it. When it was tuned up it sounded like a dream though. It was very funny and ironic that I was playing his “straight edge” guitar considering I was drinking a beer on stage. Alan is awesome for letting me borrow his guitar. The Four Year Strong guys are great. I can’t wait to see them/tour with them in the UK in February.
At your NYC show last month, there were kids smoking pot during your set. I think Soupy said something, but I can't remember. Does stuff like that piss you off?
Yea there was someone smoking. Soupy did say something. It doesn’t bother me personally. I mean I’m sure it sucks for the people standing around them that don’t want anything to do with weed or drugs in general. I feel bad for them but it doesn’t really affect me directly. I think people smoking cigarettes in a venue bothers me more. Not because I hate cigarettes (though I quit nearly 3 months ago) but because it is hard to breathe/sing with half the room is smoking cigarettes all at once.
how did you enjoy playing in towson recently? i was there and had a blast.
The venue we played at in Towson is rad… Recher theater or something like that. We have played there twice and both times have been packed and absolutely amazing. I’ve only had good memories there so far. The sound guy is cool too.
You guys need to play with such gold dec 3rd. in va.
which brings me to my question.
Do you like playing in VA?
That would be fun but we can’t because we will still be writing our new record then and that is our priority.
If you are talking about VA beach, which is where we normally play in VA, I have mixed feelings. The last 2 times were fun. A while back we had to stop playing 3 or 4 songs into our set because of people being assholes and intentionally hurting others via mosh. We gave multiple fair warnings that we would stop if the shit continued and it continued. We therefore had to stop and it sucked because most of the people there to see us were having a good times and acting like reasonable human beings. There were just a few people ruining it for everyone else. That night bummed me out big time.
Have you ever considered releasing more solo stuff? You're christmas song is amazing
I really would love to. I just don’t have the time right now. All my efforts are being put towards the band. It is kind of hard to write while I am on the road but I really should try to do some stuff in the near future. I have a whole bunch of solo stuff recorded but it is kind of embarrassing because I wrote all the songs years and years ago. The lyrics are pretty terrible. Thanks by the way. I’m glad that you enjoy the Christmas song.
I went to see Motion City Soundtrack last night with Saves the Day and Say Anything. If you have the money and are free when this tour come through your area make sure to go. Motion City Soundtrack was definitely the highlight of the show for me. I’ve seen them like 4 times and they are perfect every time. I got chills watching them.
Writing sessions with The Wonder Years have been very productive so far… knock on wood. I’m excited to start demoing the songs.
For it being the first day of writing things went very smoothly. We all had fairly positive attitudes, there were no major arguments, I had a great time, ate Wawa and we wrote a song. I’m sure that the song will change a whole lot before it is finished but it is sounding great as of now. Hopefully tomorrow will go as well as today did.
I decided to make a timeline of the order I got into bands. On this list I only mention each artist once and my favorite or most inspirational record by them. I know I’m missing a ton of bands but here is what I can remember off of the top of my head.
